Our last weeks of school were very busy with cultural celebrations and winter party activities. We decorated our classroom door with a How the Grinch Stole Christmas theme. I think the class are adorable Whos and I make a pretty good Grinch! Jingles was very busy. She was up to her usual antics. In fact, she was so busy, she tired herself out! As part of our unit on culture, we explored what countries our ancestors came from. Then we looked at where these countries are located. We graphed the continents where our ancestors' countries are located. The class enjoyed some delicious snacks representing the the continents and countries we are studying. On Wednesday, we really enjoyed our annual Cultural Luncheon. Families sent delicious foods that represent their cultures. We are thankful for all of the families who sent foods and the parents who came to help set-up, serve, and clean up. The class made reindeer bags to hold our reindeer munch gift. We hope our parents enjoyed the treat! On Friday, we had a wonderful time at our winter party. Room moms provided delicious pizza, fruit, and cookies. The class made adorable snowmen sculptures. We ended the party with our puzzle exchange. We had to say goodbye to our class elf, Jingles. We hope she has a safe trip back to the North Pole! I would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season and a very Happy New Year! I look forward to seeing you in 2019!

In our current IB unit, we are learning about celebrations in different cultures. We launched our unit with a gallery walk to observe photos of various celebrations and create a list of "I wonders." Learners have been researching food, clothing, and traditions associated with holiday celebrations. We were excited to have two guest speakers who shared their family's cultural traditions. Thanks goes to Mrs. Dubois for coming to talk about Hanukkah. As part of the unit, 2nd graders performed a multi-cultural program highlighting songs and dances around the world. Everyone looked so beautiful and handsome in their cultural clothing. 2nd grade performed earlier in the day for the school. We are also learning about the continents and oceans of the world. We are looking at maps, land features, foods, and customs of each of the continents. We have enjoyed Mexican hot chocolate and empanadas from North and South America. We made wassail and decorated gingerbread cookies from Europe. We tasted delicious Tin Tin cookies from Australia. In science, we observed and compared motion of wind-up toys. Our classroom is currently under elf surveillance. Jingles the elf joined our class last week. She has been keeping an eye on behavior and leaving some fun treats, as well. We have enjoyed hearing about two classmates who were our Stars of the Week over the past two weeks. Last, but not least, we were excited to have Mrs. Caviness come and read to the class. Thanks!!
