2nd grade was excited to go on our first field trip this week. We visited the Biodiversity Education Center at Coppell Nature Park. While we were there, we learned about insects, plants, and habitats. The volunteers at the center always go above and beyond to make our trip educational and fun. Thanks go to Mrs. Dubois and Mrs. Edwards for chaperoning our trip! Earlier in the week, we observed crickets and butterfly larva. We have also been observing seeds and plants, as well as the plant life cycle. Other exciting events from the last few days are hearing from our Star of the Week and honoring our Global Citizens for the third nine weeks. We also celebrated a birthday.

It was a busy week this week in 2A as we prepared for Open House and welcomed our chicks. We were excited to celebrate all of our hard work and the chicks' hard work in popping out of the eggs! The first chick started hatching last Sunday afternoon. It only took a few minutes for it to break out of its shell. Chick #2 came along a few minutes later. By Tuesday morning, we had 14 beautiful chicks! After staying in the incubator for a few hours, we moved the chicks to our brooder box with a heat lamp. It did not take long for them to become soft and fluffy. Here are our 14 beauties! Group Shots Live Action It was fun to watch our chicks hatch, but it was more fun to hold them! The class also worked very hard to prepare for Open House. They completed their research projects on animal cycles and habitats, then shared their information with classmates. Research Project Examples As a culminating project, learners made dioramas to show their animal's habitat. On Thursday night, parents and guests saw displays of inquiry, math, science, social studies, and writing. We also had to say goodbye to our chicks. They traveled back to the farm where they were happily received. We wish them a happy life! Bailey Farms Happy Spring Break!
It is hard to believe that it is already the first day of March. The weather doesn't seem to know that is is almost spring. But, even though it is cold outside, we are busy inside learning about animals, their life cycles and habitats. Learners chose an animal to research. As a culminating activity, they created their animal out of Model Magic and then created a habitat for the animal. We look forward to hearing about their animals when they make their presentations. The class enjoyed working with Mrs. Kirkley in guidance class this week. They practiced working cooperatively and being kind to each other. We loved hearing all about our Star of the Week. We also enjoyed hearing him read a favorite book. As we anxiously await hatch day for our eggs, we were happy to have a special guest from 2C come and show us an egg from his own chicken. Be sure to watch the live stream of our hatching eggs. Hopefully they will be popping out soon!
