Pinkerton celebrated Character Day on September 22. We joined 124 countries and all 50 states to participate in activities that promote good character. Learners reflected on how character affects and improves our lives. As we continue with our unit on expressing ourselves, learners practiced using written expression. They played the Roll-a-Story game and worked together to create fictional stories. Afterwards, we all enjoyed hearing the creative and clever stories. Learners practiced storytelling skills as they worked in partners to listen to a familiar story and retell it to the class. We took the same familiar stories and are working on dramatic presentations. For Frizzle Friday, we conducted experiments to answer our questions from last week. This learner was so interested in our exploration of objects last week, on her own, at home, she researched what was inside the metal ball and presented her findings to the class. Way to go! We ended the week with a wonderful guest reader!

Learners practiced math using dots on Dot Day. Dice games were a big hit. As part of our inquiry unit How We Express Ourselves, we explored pointillism and then created dot pictures of our own. Earlier in the week, learners used creativity to paint the sculptures they created last week. This week's Frizzle Friday involved learning to generate questions. Learners observed objects and developed questions about them. Next they discussed if the questions were testable or should be researched. Next week we will test the objects using the questions generated by the class. Thanks to Mrs. Telling for being our Guest Reader this week. We enjoyed hearing your books!
Routines are important to a successful reading workshop. This week we continued to practice workstation routines. Learners participate in these activities when not involved in a direct-teach reading group lesson. We also worked on routines in other literacy areas. The class is doing an excellent job staying on task in one spot. In math, we made addition and subtraction sentences using a fun dice game. Learners explored an additional way to express themselves through art. We looked at various sculptures and then used Model Magic to create sculptures that represent a feeling. We enjoyed a colorful Frizzle Friday this week. Learners used simple materials (markers, coffee filters and water) to demonstrate how pigments travel and how some colors are made up of other colors.
We are off to a great start with our unit on self-expression. On Monday we presented our It's Not a Box creations. Check our our video to see what we dreamed up. Remember, our projects are NOT A BOX! This past week, we have been learning about perspective and interpretations of works of art. We did a gallery walk to observe different pieces and added sticky notes noting our feelings and "I wonders" about each piece. Using watercolors, learners created their own masterpieces to express their feelings. Learners are also working on self-expression in art. Mrs. Huckle had them dress up "expressively" to take the pressure off of creating self-portraits. In writing we created circle maps to describe ourselves and people who have influenced us. We used the circle maps to write paragraphs about ourselves. We used the writing process to organize, edit, peer-revise, and make final copies of our paragraphs. Our final copies are in display in the hall outside our classroom. In literacy, we practiced working in workstations. Learners did a fabulous job staying in one spot and staying on task. In math, we have been working on expressing numbers in various forms. In groups, we made posters showing four different ways to show a number. Learners were very excited to participate in our very first Frizzle Friday. Each week, we will be celebrating science with fascinating experiments in the style of Mrs. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus series. We ended the week with our very first guest reader and a birthday celebration.
