This month we have been participating in the Global Read Aloud program. We are reading the book The Year of Billy Miller. We are excited about sharing our thoughts on the book with another class through Skype and Twitter. (The location of the class is a mystery. Our class will be learning more about where our new friends are from soon.) Our new IB unit is How We Organize Ourselves. We will be looking at leaders and how they influence society. Today we kicked things off by expressing our thoughts on leaders by using a Linoit board. Learners were able to post sticky notes online to share their ideas. You may view our board at http://linoit.com/users/gdenton/canvases/Leaders. We will do this activity again at the end of our unit to see if our thoughts have changed. Today we enjoyed hearing our Star of the Week share her favorite book.

We have been working hard to finish up our unit on weather. We made diagrams of the water cycle. In math this week, we looked at average temperatures and annual average precipitation of cities around the world and made line and bar graphs to show our information. We used the graphs to compare the weather in these cities with our weather in our city. We explored the concept of convection by observing the behavior of cool and warm water when it is put together. We love hearing all about our Stars of the Week.
Learners had a wonderful time showing off their creative expression projects this afternoon at our Arts Festival. We exhibited examples of water color, sculpture, pointillism, collage, poetry and drama. Thanks to all of the sweet children in our class for all of the wonderful cards, gifts, lunch, and warm wishes in honor of my birthday. It is always special when you get to spend your birthday with such caring children and parents. We continued to celebrate creativity by reenacting three familiar fairy tales. We will be recording our performances and presenting them at the Arts Festival on Wednesday.
We are nearing the end of our IB unit Creative Expression, but we are still working hard on our dramatic interpretations of familiar fairy tales. Groups have been working together to write scripts. The class is also working hard to plan and write creative stories. I am hopeful that many parents and guests will be able to join us at our Annual 2nd Grade Arts Festival on Wednesday.
