2nd grade enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year. We ended the 15 day celebration with our Chinese New Year parade. Our Star of the Week did an awesome job sharing a book and his poster with us! We continue to wait for our chicks to hatch!

2A loved all of the activities that went on in our class last week. Check out what we have been doing and learning about. Valentine Fun The week was filled with love. On Tuesday, as part of our Valentine's Day traditions, 2A loved delivering valentines to Pinkerton learners and staff. Then on Thursday, we had fun at our Valentine's Day party. We loved reading the compliments that classmates wrote about us and getting valentines and candy grams. Thanks to the parents who sent food and those who came to help. We appreciate you! We loved library and maker space this week. It was exciting to have so many activities to choose from for maker space. We loved starting our new IB unit How the World Works. We will be exploring different kinds of cycles such as life cycles, plant cycles, rock cycles, the water cycle, weather cycles, and the moon cycle. We are learning about the Chinese lunar calendar and the phases of the moon as we prepare for our Annual Chinese New Year Parade. Don't forget that Tuesday, February 19 is our 2nd Grade Chinese New Year Parade. It starts at 8:15 am. Parents and guests are invited to attend. Learners should wear traditional Chinese clothing or red for the parade.
On February 1st, our class read about the tradition of groundhogs being able to predict the weather. After looking at weather trends for the week, the class made predictions about whether the groundhog would see its shadow on Groundhog's Day. The following Monday, we went out and observed our shadows, just like the groundhog. It was fun to draw, measure, and track our shadows. February 1 was also World Read-Aloud Day. We celebrated by having a very special guest reader. I was very happy to have a former 2A learner come back to our class to read! In science, we observed various items and determined if they were magnetic.
2nd grade was excited to have a wonderful guest speaker to tell us all about fossil fuels. We enjoyed a wonderful kindergarten program last week called It's a Small World. It was great to see the honor choir at the end of the program. I love seeing this program. It has been a Pinkerton tradition for many years. On Wednesday, Pinkerton participated for the first time in Global School Play Day. All learners throughout our building enjoyed putting down their technology and getting back to good old-fashioned play. Our class enjoyed making forts with blankets to play under. We played with hand puppets. We played board games and put together puzzles. It was great fun to practice our social skills while building relationships with learners from other grade levels and classrooms, solving problems, being creative, and learning. On Thursday night, Pinkerton celebrated the great book series Harry Potter. Harry Potter fans flocked to our school to participate in many exciting activities. We were thankful for our fabulous Dad of the Day this past week. We appreciate him for helping us with our reading and our math, as well as helping out all over the school throughout the day. All of our Stars of the Week have done a great job helping us get to know them. We loved hearing about them, hearing them read their favorite books, and even celebrating their birthdays.
