We started off today with the Kindergarten Nursery Rhyme Parade. It was fun to see all of the kindergartners dressed as their favorite characters. After the parade, we had our first end of the nine weeks assembly. Perfect Attendance and Global Citizen awards were given out. For a little Halloween fun, we carved a jack-o-lantern for our classroom. The insides of the pumpkin were a little squishy! But it turned out looking good. We continued our little mini unit on monsters by reading Frank is a Monster Who Likes to Dance. We learned that you should keep on going, even when things (like your body) start falling apart. After recess, Ms. Hays read Monster Goose to us. The creepy take on Mother Goose rhymes was entertaining and fun. Throughout the day, we watched Monsters, Inc. and discussed how the characters from the story were good and not so good leaders. We used a circle map to organize our thoughts.

We also read I Need My Monster. We created Help Wanted ads to advertise for a monster of our very own. You would be surprised what kinds of things a monster can do! Mrs Freyou planned an extra special library time for us today. First she read a great Halloween book and then we checked out books in the dark using only flashlights! At the end of the day, we read My Mama Says There Aren't Any Zombies, Ghosts, Vampires, Creatures, Demons, Monsters, Fiends, Goblins, or Things by Judith Viorst. We learned that even though mamas sometimes make mistakes, they are always there to take care of us.
Happy Almost Halloween! For Red Ribbon Week learners came dressed as their favorite role model. We had family members, sports heroes, entertainers, a librarian, a teacher, and an inventor in 2A today. Mrs Hays posted our What Should Mrs. Denton Be For Halloween pictures and writing around the school. This is what 2A came up with for me to wear on Halloween. Click the Halloween button to hear learners' reasons for picking each costume.
Everyone looked great in their red outfits today. It is important to remember to always take care of your heart to keep it healthy and happy. After recess, we were excited to meet the mayor of Coppell, Mrs. Karen Hunt. She spoke to us about her role as leader of the city of Coppell. We learned many interesting facts about what it is like to be the mayor.
This morning we completed a short writing project. Learners drew pictures and wrote about what they think Mrs. Denton should wear for Halloween. I got some great ideas! I look forward to sharing them soon.
We are hard at work working on addition and subtraction facts in math. Today we worked on doubles facts and learned the terms addend and sum. Be sure to ask your child what they mean. This morning I asked the class to help me out with a problem. You see, I can't decide what Halloween costume to wear on Halloween. So they thought about it and came up with some suggestions. I can't wait to share them when we are finished. I got some great ideas! Then we listened to some excellent Halloween stories written by classmates. After recess, we listened to Austin's grandma read a Halloween story to us. We also continued to work on learning about leaders in the field of science. We took our information from our sticky notes on the Linoit board and used them to compare and contrast the people that we read about. At the end of the day, our Star of the Week shared his poster and personal items that he brought to tell about himself. He did a great job!
Library was fun today. Mrs. Freyou showed us the different areas of the library and where to find what we are looking for. After lunch, we continued working on our study of leaders in science. Pairs of learners read and made notes about people in the field of science who are leading others and making a difference.
Yesterday, before we enjoyed Pinky Palooza, we were quite busy at school. Mrs. Sims was kind enough to work with us to set-up our IB e-portfolios. Everyone worked hard to create an account and some even had time to start adding content. We will be working on these again next week. In class, we worked cooperatively to create a list of the top ten qualities of a great leader. This afternoon we spent time talking about leaders in the field of science. We read short stories about all kinds of scientists who are great leaders in their fields. Tomorrow in partners, we will choose one interesting scientist and then use the computers to post an online sticky note on our Leadership Linoit board telling why this person is important. The end of the day found us having lots of fun in art class! Thanks, Mrs. Huckle! Tonight Pinkerton families came out to celebrate at our very own Pinky Palooza. The Pinkerton PTO organized a fantastic event! The food was delicious and the games and events were fun. Everyone had a great time! I enjoyed seeing the smiling faces of my class and their families, as well as many old friends.
We had a fabulous day in 2nd grade today! We were able to Skype with meteorologists from different areas of the United States and have them answer our questions about weather and forecasting. First, in the morning, we Skyped with meteorology students from Pennsylvania. They did a wonderful job answering our questions about the weather where they are located, as well as questions about what it is like to be a meteorologist and general weather questions. After lunch, we Skyped with a professor from the University of Oklahoma. He told us about the weather in Oklahoma and in Arizona, where he was currently attending a conference. He answered our questions about various weather conditions including hurricanes and tornadoes. He also spoke about forecasting weather and how meteorologists are able to predict the weather accurately. Second graders did an excellent job developing relevant questions!
