Following spring break, we have been observing insect life cycles. First we started with crickets. We have only been able to observe adult crickets so far. We worked on identifying and labeling the parts of a cricket. They have been quite noisy in our classroom! We are currently observing a couple of insects in the larval stage. We are watching to see the changes over time. Right now, we do not know what insect the larva with change in to. We will continue to watch for clues. We call them Insect #1 and Insect #2. In math, we are continuing to work with three dimensional shapes. Today, learners finished creating real life objects using 3D shapes. We enjoyed hearing from our Star of the Week today.

Our class had such a great time observing how chicken eggs hatch. We started on Feb. 6 when we put eggs in our incubator. Twenty-one days later, our chicks started hatching. 2A hatched ten out of fifteen eggs. We had fun watching, petting, holding, and showing off our chicks. What an excellent way to learn about cycles. The March 6 blog post showed the newly hatched chicks. Today's photos show the chicks at one and a half weeks old. It is amazing how much they have grown. Some are starting to show feathers. The chicks in 2A were interesting and different, and we loved them very much. Some of the other classes also had some interesting chicks. We were surprised to learn that there is a breed of chickens that does not have feathers on their necks. Also, one chick was a breed that has very curly feathers. It was a great learning experience to have the chicks in our class. We were excited to show them off at Open House. But, all good things must come to an end. So on Friday afternoon before Spring Break, the chicks had to go home to the farm where they will be well cared for and grow into beautiful adult chickens. This is the farm where the chicks will live.
Pinkerton's 2018 Open House was a huge success! Thanks to everyone for coming! We had 100% participation! Learners worked very hard on their work and were so proud to present it to parents and guests.
We have had a great week with out chicks. It was fun to watch them hatch and now it is fun to have them hanging out in our room. |
