This week we had a fun time celebrating Red Ribbon Week at Pinkerton. Each day learners dressed up in different ways to remind everyone to stay healthy and drug free. This year's theme is "Your Future Is Key, So Stay Drug Free!" We enjoyed hearing story teller Jiaan Powers tell us fun stories. We loved that she brought her lion friend! Thanks to Mrs. Hunt for bringing her in. Mrs. Hunt presents a lesson on finding resources. Learners use Pebble Go to research people for our research project on leaders. This was our week to participate in Makerspace to practice our higher level thinking skills. In science we are exploring force and motion. Learners sorted items according to the way they move. The PTO sponsored the Annual Pinky Palooza. Families gathered for some delicious food and fun! Before the cold front came through, we were able to get out into the garden to plant carrots and peas, as well as learn about compost from Mrs. Pickrell. We celebrated the end of the first nine weeks with an assembly. Mrs. Larson reads to the class. We were excited to have Mr. Miller as our awesome guest reader this week! We loved hearing our Star of the Week tell about her self and show us her favorite items.

To kick off our new IB unit on leaders, our class read a fun readers' theater called A Barn With No Boundaries. It was about a group of farm animals who were trying to live in the same barn with no leader or rules. After reading the play, each learner picked which animal from the play that they believed would make the best leader based on that animal's leadership qualities.
Our science activity this week was fun and exciting. We participated in an engineering challenge. Teams of learners planned and built bridges out of various materials to see if they could build a structure that could hold weight. We tested the structures first with one heavy dictionary on top, then two, then three! This week we had two awesome Stars of the Week. We enjoyed hearing these boys' favorite books and learning all about them when they presented their posters! The end of the nine weeks means that it is time to name our Global Citizens for this grading period. Congratulations to these two deserving 2A classmates! They will be honored at a Global Citizen Breakfast and have their names called out at our end of the nine weeks assembly. We are looking forward to exciting Red Ribbon Week activities and Pinky Palooza coming up next week!
We had a great week last week. Cool fall air finally arrived, but didn't stay long. We enjoyed it while it was here. By the reaction of children on the playground, you would have thought it was snowing already. Brrrr! We began learning about maps and globes. We practiced our map skill by learning how to color a map neatly using colored pencils. We continued exploring matter, combining our science and math skills. Several learners chose to use their Dojo points to read to first grade classes. Mrs. Miller, our guest reader this week, planned a fun activity. After reading the book The Hallo-Wiener, she had the children act out the story. Oscar, the wiener dog, looked awesome! Everyone was excited that she brought a treat to go along with the activity! Thanks, Mrs. Miller! It was a happy week!
Last week we wrapped up our first IB unit, How We Express Ourselves, with our Second Grade Arts Showcase. To prepare for the event, learners created a scrapbook with items they created during the unit. Parents and other guests were invited to join us in the cafeteria to view the learner's scrapbooks. Afterwards learners and guests went to individual classrooms to view drama presentations. Thanks to everyone who was able to come!
Learners model the shirts that they designed for themselves. In science this week, learners continued exploring properties of matter. First they discovered which material would keep ice colder: fur, foil, plastic wrap, or felt. Then learners chose a material to see which would help them excavate a Lego person from a block of ice faster. On Thursday, learners explored what would happen if they mixed cornstarch and water with a little bit of color. They predicted whether the result would be solid or liquid. Happy Birthday Mrs. Denton! Thanks to everyone for the flowers, cards, gifts, cupcakes, and lunch! You all made my whole week special!
