This week we celebrated the 2nd nine weeks of school with our End of the Nine Weeks Assembly. It is hard to believe that we are half way through this school year. We enjoyed seeing the 4th grade recorder performance. It was great to see former second graders have so much fun performing for us. It was also great to see learners being recognized for their accomplishments. This week we kicked off our new IB unit called Sharing the Planet. We got started by hearing a very interesting guest speaker. Mr. Newman, a geologist, came to talk to 2nd grade about rocks. We enjoyed hearing about his rock collection and his job as a geologist. The class was very excited to explore rocks by sorting and naming their attributes. We also looked at some rock collections made up of the three different kinds of rocks. Learners identified igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. The class was able to get outdoors before the cold weather hit to work in the Pinkerton Patch. Learners clipped spinach leaves and delivered them to the cafeteria where they were served to Pinkerton learners on Thursday and Friday during lunch. In reading, we have been working on reading stories and books with dialogue. Reading partners practiced reading dialogue with proper intonation and expression. We were happy to have Mrs. Hays and Dr. de la Isla in to observe our practice. It was great hearing from our last two Stars of the Week. We had one presentation on Monday and one on Friday! I hope everyone is having a fabulous long weekend!

Our new year is off to a great start! We kicked off the week looking at how different people celebrate the new year. We were also excited to have a guest speaker tell us about the celebration of Mardi Gras. We even got to have a taste of King's cake. It was yummy! We finished up our Cultural Celebrations unit by presenting our research findings. Groups worked together to explore a holiday of their choice and report on traditions. Antarctica was our last continent to explore. We celebrated by declaring Friday Antarctica Day in our class. We stayed warm by wearing our PJs. We also had fun doing a directed drawing of a penguin. In library, Mrs. Hunt taught a lesson on chapter books. The class enjoyed taking a few minutes to read the interesting chapter books that they checked out. Our Star of the Week read to the class and celebrated her belated birthday. We are all happy to back in school!
