The rainy days over the last couple of weeks have kept us inside on several days. However, it did not stop all of the fun activities going on at Pinkerton and in our classroom! In science, we read the book Iggy Peck, Architect. Then learners took on the role of architect, chose materials, and designed either a bridge or a tower. We were looking for bridge designs that would hold weight and tower designs that would stand tall. Learners practice math skills using technology and games. We worked on writing and illustrating original stories. We continued our exploration of matter with the Lego Man excavation project. First graders from 1A came over to collect data for a project. We were happy to lend a hand.

Morning Choice time allows learners to design and create using their own ideas and creativity. In math, the class has been working on comparing numbers and practicing math facts. Our science activities this week found us asking questions about matter. We are beginning to wrap up our unit on How We Express Ourselves, but not before learners designed iron-on transfers to decorate their t-shirts. All of the t-shirt designs can be seen at our Arts Showcase on October 3. Our second Star of the Week did an excellent job sharing all about herself with us. We enjoyed hearing her read her favorite book, as well as celebrated her birthday!
As part of our IB unit, How We Express Ourselves, our class learned about pointillism, which is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. Learners wore dots to help celebrate the day. Stay tuned to see our learners in our class will make their marks... Earlier in the week, we finished up our puppet show presentations. We loved seeing the creative puppets and story plots! We have moved on to drama. We started presenting our plays and will finish them up on Monday. Check out some of our clever costumes. More pics will be coming soon! In math this week, we continue to work on fact fluency, place value, and comparing numbers. Our science inquiry lesson focused on matter. We explored objects to see if they were flexible or rigid. The class was very excited to get to go to our first Makerspace session for this year. Makerspace provides hands-on, creative ways to encourage learners to design, experiment, build and invent. We were excited to celebrate our first Star of the Week of the year. It also happened to be his birthday, so we had a double celebration on Friday!
2A learners continue to express themselves in different ways. We were excited to begin our journey into drama by making puppets. Learners chose to make either a sack puppet, stick puppet, or finger puppet. Then they improvised short shows shows featuring their creations. More presentations will be happening next week as we continue our exploration of drama. Also this past week, we explored books by Ezra Jack Keats and then expressed ourselves through collage. Our class is excited to download an additional iPad app to use in reading. We were happy to have our first guidance lesson with Mrs. Kirkley. Her lesson focused on kindness and how to be a bucket filler. We also enjoyed our first guest reader of the year. Thanks, Mrs. Wahl, for reading Mrs. Nelson is Missing to the class. We appreciate you for taking time to visit our classroom! Guest Reader link: https://gingerdenton.weebly.com/guest-reader-sign-up.html
We continue to explore different ways to express ourselves through art. Learners participated in a gallery walk to view images of famous masterpieces. They were asked to put a sticky note describing how the piece made them feel on each image. Afterwards, learners created their own drawings to show a particular emotion. The class tried to guess which emotion that the learners were trying to show. Learners used water colors to express themselves. During science, learners explored color through several different experiments. Each morning during Morning Choice time, learners are allowed to choose a brain building activity, including problem solving activities and strategy games. We love hearing about the journeys of our classmates and seeing interesting items from their trips. We were excited to have our first library time this past week. Mrs. Hunt had the class review library information with a fun scavenger hunt. We were also happy to check out books for the first time this year! It was a busy week. We are looking forward to a relaxing Labor Day weekend.
