Learners got in a frightful mood by reading scary poems during reading class. Here are the poems they chose to share. Hope you are not too scared! In science and math, we compared pumpkins by weighing and measuring them. We also counted seeds to see which one had the most. Afterwards, we turned them into fun jack-o-lanterns. Since Halloween is the time to dress up in a costume, class members each chose a costume for Mrs. Denton to wear. In Spanish class this week, learners created beautiful masks. Monsters took over our class this week as the class read and wrote about them. Check out our creations. Flashlight reading is always fun! At the end of the day, we passed out monster treats. Happy Halloween, everyone!

Last week was Red Ribbon Week at Pinkerton. Learners participated in many different ways. Put a Cap on Drugs! Put a Shade on Drugs! Trunk-or-Treat and Pinky Palooza Coppell Firefighters review fire safety rules with K-2 learners. Science exploration - spinning and rolling Morning Choice Creations Star of the Week We were happy to have a special guest reader this past week. Thanks to Emily Denton for coming to read to the class.
It seems like the rain will not go away and we are spending a lot of time inside. But, while we are in, we are making the best of our time. We started out our week with a fun science inquiry about changing matter. Who knew ice balls could be so fun! Mrs. Mikkelsen came to speak to 2nd grade about her leadership role at Pinkerton. Pinkerton Student Council also came to speak to our class about their leadership roles at our school. They did a fabulous job! We have expanded our look at leaders to the community. Our first community leader to come and speak to 2nd grade about his leadership role was Mr. Caviness, one of our school board members. We appreciate that he took time out of his schedule to come and pay us a visit! Later in the week in science, we explored motion. Learners looked at many different objects and sorted them into groups of objects that can slide, spin, or roll. Wednesday night was Pinkerton Night at Spring Creek Barbecue. It was great to see everyone there! Learners share a book that they wrote outside of class. Our class hangs out in the library and reads during our check-out time. Our Star of the Week had a big week. Early in the week, she read a book to the class. Then later, she shared her poster and items about herself and her mom was our guest reader. We ended our week by celebrating our first nine weeks with our end of the nine weeks assembly. We were happy to receive the art award. We also celebrated our two Global Citizens for the first nine weeks. We are proud of their integrity and hard work!
This week we kicked off our new IB unit called How We Organize Ourselves. We will be learning about leaders and how they impact us. The class read a fun readers' theater called A Barn With No Boundaries. It was about a group of farm animals who were trying to live in the same barn with no leader or rules. After reading the play, each learner picked which animal from the play that they believed would make the best leader based on that animal's leadership qualities. Groups created campaign posters to try to convince classmates to vote for their animal to be leader of the barn. In Spanish, learners experienced virtual reality during their weekly lesson. Star of the Week and Birthday Boy
Second grade has completed our first IB unit, How We Express Ourselves. To celebrate, we held our annual Arts Showcase. Parents and guests joined us in the Pinkerton cafeteria to see all of the learners' creative work. Parents and guests came back to our classroom to see our drama presentations.
The class loved designing their t-shirts! They wore them for the Showcase. Following the Showcase, we took a little break on the playground. This week we got together with our 5th grade buddy class to write bio poems. Everyone had a great time! Our Star of the Week did an excellent job reading to the class. We learned about Anne Frank. On Thursday, our star shared her poster and told about herself.
