The last days of September were filled with fun. Everyone enjoyed the Book Fair. Learners and families enjoyed Game Night and Coffee with Cowgirls as part of our Book Fair events. It was fun to see so many grandparents come for lunch during Grandparents Week. Since the library was filled with the Book Fair merchandise, Mrs. Hunt was kind enough to bring the library to our classroom so learners could check out new books. Learners expressed themselves by writing and illustrating stories. In math, the class explored number lines. In pairs, they created number lines with varying patterns. Our Star of the Week read to us about Little Critters and wowed us with his poster presentation about himself. We ended the week with a great guest reader. Thanks to Mrs. Ostlund for coming to read to the class!

We are continuing our unit on How We Express Ourselves by exploring drama. Learners used their creativity to create puppets. Later in the week, learners chose a familiar story to present as a short play. They have been collaborating to develop lines and plan simple costumes and props. In science, the class continued to explore matter. This week they looked at how matter can change when exposed to hot or cold temperatures. Mrs. Larson baked delicious cookies to demonstrate how batter can change when heated. The class was happy to help her dispose of the experiment materials. We were excited to have our first Star of the Week present her poster and share other favorite items. We ended the week with an awesome guest reader. Thanks goes to Mr. Miller for reading to us!
On Monday, we remembered patriots and heroes of September 11. We discussed what makes someone a patriot and ways everyone can make a difference. Learners wrote thank you letters to our local firefighters and police officers to thank them for their service to our community. Wednesday was Global Character Day. We talked about the importance of having good character and ways people can show good character traits such as respect, responsibility, kindness, friendship, empathy, and courage. Our week was filled with colorful activities. Our first activity was painting sculptures that learners created last week. in science, we explored how dish soap causes color that has been added to milk to swirl and mix together. Then we observed how color can travel and spread with an agent like water. Friday was International Dot Day. We explored way we can "make our mark" on the world. We also included the use of dots in our math activity. In science, we continued our unit on matter by exploring objects to see if they are flexible or rigid. We had a fun time working with puppets. First we explored with premade puppets. Then learners created their own puppet to use in a puppet presentation next week. We ended our week with our first guest reader of the year. We appreciate this mom for taking time out to come and share a fun poetry book with us!
Due to the Labor Day holiday, we had a short week this past week. It may have had fewer days, but we were able to pack in a lot of learning. The class continued to explore different artistic mediums to express themselves. Early in the week, they worked with Mrs. Larson to create a collage using torn paper. Later in the week, we looked at different types of sculpture. The class used Model Magic to create a small sculpture showing something they like or think is interesting. Next week, they will paint their creations. In science, learners sketched what a scientist would look like. After discussion, the class concluded that anyone can be a scientist. You just have to have good questioning skills and be able to find answers to your questions. Later, we explored a collection of objects and discussed their properties. Then we grouped the objects in different ways according to those properties. We brainstormed questions about the items and discussed whether we would be able to find the answers to our questions by conducting scientific testing or with research. We will continue to work on developing good questioning skills. Thursday night was Curriculum Night at Pinkerton. I was happy that such a large number of parents could attend. If you were unable to be there, please click on the Parent Information tab that can be found at the top of this page. Also, please be sure to sign up for a parent conference. I am looking forward to meeting personally with each of you!
On Monday, learners were excited to present their creations made from a box. We were excited to see all of their amazing ideas. We continued to practice our classroom routines. These learners are working on reading with a buddy. In writing, we worked on revising and editing. First the class learned how to use editing marks, then they practiced with a partner by editing their paragraphs about themselves. We continued enjoying our Morning Choice time. Learners choose from reading, writing, problem solving, puzzles, art, and building with Legos. On Thursday and Friday afternoon, second grade learners participated in enrichment activities led by Mrs. Mikkelsen, Mrs. Hux, Mrs. Kirkley, Mrs. Pickrell, Ms. Hays, and Mrs. Hunt. Second grade teachers were able to pull learners individually during this time to work on reading and math beginning of the year assessments.
It was another busy week. I think everyone is looking forward to a relaxing Labor Day holiday. |
