After reading I Need My Monster, learners created their own monsters using cut paper. They used a story map to organize a creative story with their monster as a character. Then they used the map to write a fun monster story. As a concluding activity, we made monster cupcakes in class. We had a monstrous amount of fun this week! |
Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States. Pinkerton participated in many fun activities this week to help us remember to stay drug and violence free. On Monday, we kicked-off Red Ribbon Week by wearing red and bringing healthful red items to eat for snack and lunch. On Tuesday, we wore our favorite team jerseys to school to help us think about teaming up for balance in your life. On Wednesday, we wore pajamas to remember to hold on to our dreams about a life without drugs or violence. On Thursday, learners wore crazy hair and hats to help them remember to use their heads and think about things they say or do. Our Red Ribbon Week activities concluded on Friday with Walk to School Day. Learners were dropped off at either the fire station or the Dairy Queen and walked to school with their classmates and teachers. Exercise makes strong bodies and minds that make good decisions! Other activities this week included playing the telephone game in the library to demonstrate how words change as they get passed along. Mrs. Hunt read the book What James Said, a book about misunderstandings and friendship. The Coppell Fire Department came with their annual clown show to talk about how to properly use 911 and things to do during an emergency. In math, we did some spooky math using symbols for numbers. Learners had to use algebra skills to determine the unknown value of numbers. Friday was Pumpkin Day in second grade. First, we read pumpkin books. Later, we combined math and science with our exploring pumpkins activity. In the afternoon, we developed testable questions that we would like to answer about pumpkins. Then we weighed, measured circumference, grouped and counted seeds, and used our estimation and prediction skills to answer our questions. Our Star of the Week did an excellent job of telling us about herself.

It's hard to believe that the first nine weeks of this school year have passed us by! We were excited to be able to celebrate all of our accomplishments at our first assembly of the year. The assembly started off in a lively manner with Drum Fit performances by the upper grades. It was fun to see former 2A friends having fun to the music. Many 2A learners received recognition for their accomplishments. Global Citizens were announced. These learners consistently showed many of the IB profile traits and attitudes throughout the first nine weeks. Global Citizens will be officially honored for their accomplishments at the Global Citizen Breakfast that will be held on Wednesday, November 2nd. All learners with perfect attendance for the nine weeks were congratulated. The names of four lucky learners were drawn to win a trip to Dairy Queen for a special treat. Two of the four were from 2A! Mrs. Hunt, our librarian, recognized learners who have completed her reading challenge. The Coppell Education Foundation recognizes learners who go above and beyond expectations in the classroom. These learners are awarded the Red and Black Super Star Award. One deserving learner from each grade level is chosen by the Education Foundation each nine weeks. We are proud to announce that the 2nd grade Red and Black Super Star for the first nine weeks is from 2A! I am proud of each and every learner in 2A! They have worked extremely hard this past nine weeks and have tried to do their best each and every day. Other activities for the week included learning about building structures, as well as working together as a team. After reading the book Iggy Peck Architect, teams worked together to build a bridge that would be strong enough to hold up weight. We also watched The Magic School Bus Under Construction and a short video on what makes bridges strong to help us understand exactly how structures work. We enjoyed hearing from this week's Star of the Week. He did a fabulous job telling us about himself. We were very excited to celebrate his summer birthday just a little early! Yum! We ended the week with two great books read by this week's guest reader. Thank you Mrs. Echols, for bringing one very funny and one serious book. We loved both of them.
The highlight of last week was Pinkerton PTO's Pinky Palooza event. Families came together with Pinkerton staff to enjoy food, games, and music. Mrs. Pickrell also spoke to 2A about her leadership role in the Pinkerton garden. We enjoyed listening to her speak to us under the outdoor learning area cover and we even enjoyed our walk back to the building in the rain. Other activities this week included math practice using flash cards and math fact families. Our Star of the Week did an awesome job sharing about herself. We enjoyed hearing all about her, as well as celebrating her birthday this week! Last, but not least, we loved having Mrs.Johnson come and read monster books to our class. She has promised to come back soon and demonstrate The Monster Mash dance!
Early last week, 2nd grade presented our Arts Showcase featuring all of the ways we had learned to express ourselves. I posted photos from the event in my last blog post. Today I am happy to share the drama and storytelling presentations that our class presented. Every learner worked hard to learn parts and present with expression. Enjoy!
This past week we began our new IB unit How We Organize Ourselves. We launched our unit by reading a play called A Barnyard Without Boundaries. Animals on the farm were trying to decide who should be the leader of the barnyard. Learners selected the animal that they thought should be leader and worked in groups to list qualities their animal had that would make it a good leader. Then they worked independently to create campaign posters for their animal. Next week we will vote on which animal would be the best leader for the barnyard. In our unit, we will be looking at leaders from school, community, the state, the nation, and the world and exploring what makes an effective leader. Our Star of the Week this week did a fabulous job reading to us and telling us about herself!
Second graders celebrated the end of our first IB unit, How We Express Ourselves, as they presented their artwork, writing, and acting skills at our 2nd Grade Arts Showcase. Parents and guests enjoyed seeing the beautiful art pieces and written stories and poetry that the learners selected to go into their art portfolios. They included examples such as water color paintings, line drawings, sculpture, paintings in the style of pointillism, and creative writing in the form of stories and poetry. Afterwards, guests came back to the classrooms to see our drama presentations. The learners worked very hard on all of their pieces and were proud of their work. This week we enjoyed some cooler temperatures and were able to actually enjoy the times we were able to be outdoors. Indoors this past week, we had fun visiting the Book Fair. Mrs. Hunt and the volunteers did a wonderful job creating a fun pirate themed event. To kick it off, on Monday learners and teachers dressed as pirates. Thanks to all of the families who bought a book for our class. We can't wait to read them all! Monday night was game night. Some 2A dads and kids came out to have fun! This week was Grandparents and Special Friends Week. We were excited to have many of each visit at our lunchtime! This week we continued to work on expressing ourselves through writing. Then we worked in partners as critical friends to revise and edit the stories. We also have been working hard to prepare for our Arts Showcase that will be held next Tuesday. Learners have chosen their favorite works of art to put in a portfolio that will be displayed at the showcase. We ended the week with two learners sharing All About Me posters. And last but not least, we celebrated a very special birthday! I want to thank the room mom for cute and delicious brownie cupcakes and the class for the wonderful gift card! It was a special day for me!
