Last Monday, we were very happy to have the Trees into Cartons, Cartons into Trees people come to speak to us. Earlier in the month, learners had decorated cartons provided by Southern Champion Tray, a paperboard packaging producer in the Metroplex. The decorated cartons were picked up and returned to the learners with a beautiful pine sapling inside. We were excited to learn many facts about trees and how to conserve them. As we finished up our unit on Sharing the Planet, we created maps showing natural resources important to sustain communities. We also thought about ways we can save the planet for future generations. Our new unit is concerned with How the World Works. We will be observing different examples of natural cycles and seeing how they are related. We started off by getting our chick hatching project underway. We also did some garden work in the Pinkerton Patch. Learners worked with Mrs. Pickrell to plant radish seeds from two different sources to compare which would grow more successfully. We also picked some deliciously sour strawberries to sample. During library this week, learners had fun in the Maker Space areas. Sometimes you just have to take a break and stretch!

Pinkerton started off our celebration of Earth Day with Walk or Ride to School Day. Learners and parents helped promote a clean environment by leaving cars at home this morning. To help out our plants in the Pinkerton Patch, second graders released lady bugs into the garden. After lunch we were happy to have Mrs. Kendall as our guest reader.
This week we spent time thinking about our environment. We had Mrs. Marilyn Horton speak to us about recycling. She told us about what kinds of materials can be recycled and where they go to be recycled. We explored ways to conserve our environment and reduce or eliminate pollution. Learners made signs to remind parents in the car lines to turn off their engine while waiting to pick up their children in order to keep our air cleaner. We were excited to have an awesome guest reader on Friday afternoon.
2nd grade has started our new IB unit on natural resources. We launched the unit by thinking about what natural resources are important to us in order to live. We did a four corners activity where learners chose where they would want to live and why they chose to live there. After discussing our choices, learners were given the opportunity to move to a different location if they felt the resources there would better suit their needs. The class observed properties of matter. We explored liquids and solids. We looked for examples of natural resources in the Pinkerton Patch. We enjoyed going to library this week. Pinkerton celebrated the end of the nine weeks with an awesome assembly. Friday Fun included listening to a fabulous guest reader and hearing about our Star of the Week.
