This past week learners continued to explore their thoughts and try to express their feelings creatively. After reading a book by Ezra Jack Keats and looking at examples of collage, the class created their own collage using watercolor and cut paper. On Friday, the class looked at sculptures from around the world and then created their own piece of sculpture using Model Magic. In science, we explored color and conducted experiments that demonstrated color movement. First, we observed how color traveled from the inside to the outer edge of a coffee filter when put in water. Then we observed how color traveled when water was added to a ring of Skittles. We then did the same experiment using milk and compared the results. During Writing Workshop this week, writing partners worked together to revise their writing pieces by adding details. We were able to finish up our Emojis About Me poster presentations. One of our own classmates read a book aloud to the class. She did an awesome job! We also celebrated a birthday! Enjoy your three day weekend!

We have had another great week in 2A! We survived the heat, practiced our class routines, reviewed some skills, and had fun expressing ourselves in different ways. On Monday, the class presented their Not A Box creations. It was fun to see how creative everyone was as they transformed their boxes into something new. We enjoyed our Morning Choice activities. During this part of our day, learners engage in various enrichment and intervention activities. We practiced reading routines. In science, we discussed types of questions. We discovered that questions can be testable or researchable. Learners practiced writing questions about various objects. Then learners chose some of the objects to observe and answer the following question: Will it bend? In math, we are looking at numeracy to 100. We had fun practicing skip counting. This past week we looked at how artists show mood and feelings using lines, color, and texture. Learners were excited to express themselves by creating pencil sketches and watercolor paintings. The class loved hearing more of our friends present their Emojis About Me posters. We are looking forward to hearing the rest next week.
Our first three days of school passed quickly. We enjoyed many fun activities that helped us get to know each other better. I think our favorite was making Friendship Sushi. After reading the book Yoko, we talked about the importance of being accepting of others and open-minded to new or different ideas. We enjoyed learning about our classmates as some of them presented their Emojis About Me posters. We look forward to more poster presentations next week. This week we kicked off our first IB unit, How We Express Ourselves. During this unit, learners will explore the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity. Our launch activity started with reading the book Not A Box. In this book, a rabbit imagines the many different things that a box could be other than just a box. Learners used their creativity to turn their own boxes into unique objects. We also began our unit on matter. Groups enjoyed sorting different items and then describing ways to sort matter. We practiced Morning Choice activities to do during our enrichment and intervention time. Our class was very excited to have two guest readers this week. We loved hearing all about Mrs. Sweeney and listening to the book The Stick. We also enjoyed hearing Mrs. Hunt read about our favorite pigeon and how we should not eat our classmates! We want to thank both for coming to our classroom. I want to thank my class for working hard to make this first week so awesome!
We are practicing reading with proper feeling. It was fun to learn about each other with Find a Friend Bingo. We are looking forward to another great day tomorrow!
