I would like to wish everyone a wonderful winter break. Be safe and I will see you in January!
We had a busy week before our winter break. We started the week with penguin and pajama day to celebrate the cold continent of Antarctica. Then we conducted ice experiments. First we went ice fishing by using salt on wet ice cubes and then we experimented with melting ice using salt and colors. On Tuesday, we celebrated our diversity in a very tasty way. 2nd grade hosted our Annual Cultural Luncheon. Families sent food to represent their cultural heritage. All the food was delicious! Thanks to all of the parents who sent food and came to help serve and clean up. In library, we learned more about penguins and did penguin activities. Learners enjoyed making penguin origami. Learners made reindeer gifts for parents. They took them home in cute reindeer bags. We made it to the end of the week and our anticipated winter party. We had delicious pizza, oranges, and cookies. Learners made holiday bookmarks and exchanged fun puzzles. We had a wonderful time. Thanks to our fabulous room moms for putting the whole thing together for 2nd grade! I would like to wish everyone a wonderful winter break. Be safe and I will see you in January!

Second grade has been working on the IB theme Where We Are in Place and Time through our Cultural Celebrations unit. Learners have been researching various cultural celebrations and will be presenting information to the class. In music, learners have been learning songs and dances from various cultures. They did an exceptional job performing for both the school and parents and guests. It was exciting to see all of the different traditional clothing worn by the learners for the program. Second grade parents came to speak to learners about their family's cultural heritage and traditions. Children in Hungary put their shoes out to wait for Mikulas (St. Nicholas) to bring a treat. Learners have enjoyed sampling treats from various continents and countries. So far, we have enjoyed Mexican hot chocolate, empanadas from South America, hot spiced punch from England, and gingerbread cookies from Germany. It was fun decorating gingerbread cookies with our 5th grade buddies. We had to say goodbye to Mrs. Larson this week. We will miss her. We wish her the best of luck! She will be an awesome teacher! Jingles, 2A's class elf, has been enjoying a visit with us. In math, learners created graphs showing all of the different cultural celebrations represented in our class. In science, learners explored sound waves. We even had time for some puppet fun! We enjoyed learning about our Stars of the Week during December. Best of all, we have one more week of holiday fun and learning before the winter break!
