This week we have been exploring drama as a form of creative expression. To start us off, learners played charades to get their dramatic juices flowing. Then during reading, we have been sharing traditional fairy tales that we will turn into plays to perform for each other. In science, we have been learning about air and weather. Last week we explored using bubbles and found out how they can be used to observe the wind. This week, we made pin wheels and discovered how they can be used to observe the wind. In math we continue to work on place value to 1000 and comparing numbers. Today we played a greater than/less than game and then wrote math sentences that compare numbers.

This morning we spent time during our reading block to practice our workstations. The class is trying hard to stay in their spots and stay busy during workstation time. When others are on task and focused, guided reading groups run more smoothly. We also practiced knowing the meaning of our spelling words by using them in sentences. Capital letters and punctuation count! We also continue to work on place value to 1000. Today we played Place Value Pyramid game. Today was our day to go to Spanish class. Here are our phrases for the week:
Spanish Phrase: Hola ¿Cómo estas? 3 answers will be Tengo sueño- I am sleepy. Tengo hambre. - I am hungry. Tengo sed. - I am thirsty. We started our weather unit today by investigating air. The class learned that air takes up space and has weight. We explored air resistance by making parachutes from paper napkins and dropping them in our classroom. We looked at the Pledge of Allegiance and The Star Spangled Banner and discussed what the words to each mean. Word work this week included sorting, writing sentences, participating in a small group spelling bee and a Friday assessment.
In math, we practiced using our counting and observation skills by completing some very difficult dot to dot pictures. The morning started off with work work practice. Learners sorted their individualized lists with their groups. Then they discussed what each word meant and then wrote them in their work work journals. The class practiced observation skills by looking at objects from nature, describing and sketching them. We will use these descriptions to write poetry to express our feelings toward nature.
Learners continue to explore many different ways to express themselves through art. We looked at different types of sculptures and then the class used dough to create their own master pieces.. We also learned about pointillism and used cotton swabs and paint to create beautiful pictures. Library this week was lots of fun. The class enjoyed checking out some very interesting books. We were happy to have a wonderful guest reader on Friday afternoon. Thanks, Mrs. Meyer for reading to the class!
Currently we are working on our Creative Expression unit. Learners have be practicing expressing themselves through art. Earlier in the week, we learned some techniques to use with watercolors. Our masterpieces are beautiful. We have completed the majority of our beginning of the year assessments. The children and I are ready to start thinking about setting behavioral and academic goals and we look forward to sharing them with parents on Conference Day.
We also practiced work work. We sorted short vowel words and learned how to add them to our word work journals. In math, we practiced writing numbers three different ways. Example: 58 fifty-eight 50 + 8 School is in full swing! Last week we launched our first IB unit, Creative Expression, by reading the book Not a Box. Learners used their own creativity to design a box of their own. They turned their boxes into many creative objects. Check out our video showing the process and our products. Remember, they are NOT A BOX! We did a gallery walk to observe different paintings. Learners added sticky notes to tell how each painting made them feel. We discussed how artists try to express feelings through their works. We also discussed how the way a work makes someone feel is influenced by individual experiences and connections. In math we worked on place value. Our favorite math activity of the week was the Place Value Pyramid game. Click individual photos above to enlarge. Thursday was Library Day for 2A. We were excited to go and check out books. Click individual photos above to enlarge. On Friday we were excited to have our first Guest Reader of the year. Thank you to Mr. Madhavaram!
