We enjoyed seeing the kindergarten program, It's a Small World. Some of our learners helped out by holding US flags for the finale.
Temperatures soared this past week and we were happy to be out in the garden for a lesson from Real School Gardens. We explored plants in our Pinkerton Patch beds and then wrote descriptive paragraphs about them. It was great to be outside! We were excited that this week was our week to go to Makerspace. We had several new activities to choose from. We have been learning about ways to stay healthy and this week we concentrated on eating healthful foods. As a pre-assessment, the class used picture cards to put together a meal. We enjoyed seeing the kindergarten program, It's a Small World. Some of our learners helped out by holding US flags for the finale. On Friday, Mrs. Echols came to read to our class. We enjoyed hearing the stories she brought along!

This week was filled with fun activities! On Tuesday we sorted and delivered valentines to Pinkerton learners and staff from the 2nd Grade Valentine Mailbox. Then in the afternoon, we celebrated Valentine's Day with an exciting party. Mrs. Kirkley came to our class to do a guidance lesson with on Valentine's Day. The Star of the Week shares his favorite book. Our first field trip to the Perot Museum in Dallas was a huge success. Thanks to all of the fabulous parents who volunteered to chaperone. We appreciate your support! On Friday, we Skyped with a 2nd grade class from near Juneau, Alaska. We compared many things such as high and low temperatures, times of sunrise and sunset, hours in school, and how cold it has to get before you are not allowed to go out to recess. Coppell ISD: 40 degrees F. Alaska: 10 degrees BELOW 0 Wow! We hope to communicate with them again soon. Mrs. Hunt read a book about presidents to get ready for Presidents' Day. Learners have a holiday on Monday!
Happy 100th Day of School! We kicked off this week by celebrating the 100th Day of School. We filled the day with activities related to the number 100. How many times can you jump up and down in 100 seconds? Later in the week, we practiced our measurement skills. Learners practice responding to reading. 2A learners were interviewed for Friday Live by a former 2A learner. They all did an excellent job! Lunch with a friend We continued our study of human body systems by learning about the digestive system. Learners used simple materials to simulate how food breaks down during the digestion process. On Friday, Dr. Baker, a pediatric gastroenterologist, spoke to 2nd grade about how our body digests our food.
February arrived and brought several fun activities. We started the week off with a guidance lesson from Mrs. Kirkley. She talked about anger and how to deal with our feelings. We were happy to have the Dad of the Day, Mr. Montgomery, help us practice reading fluency. During our library time this week, Mrs. Hunt showed us a preview of the Book Fair. Later in the week, we were able to go in and make individual wishlists. The volunteer moms set up an awesome display featuring classroom wish lists. Be sure to check ours out. Learners may start purchasing books tomorrow. On Wednesday, we prepared for Groundhog Day by exploring shadows. We learned how a shadow is made and then we observed how and why shadows change throughout the day. On Thursday, we read about groundhogs and learned why people long ago thought groundhogs could predict the weather. We read paired passages which included a nonfiction passage and poem focused on Groundhog Day. Learners worked on comprehension skills and responding to reading. Friday was all about the Chinese New Year as we celebrated with our annual parade. We learned about traditions and symbols associated with the Chinese New Year. The class particularly enjoyed learning about and seeing the Chinese lion and dragon dances. One learner (and his grandma) went above and beyond by designing a lion costume to wear in our parade! Thanks to everyone who was able to come out and see our parade. Learners share about Chinese New Year traditions. Enjoying fortune cookies and happy oranges for snack. Our Star of the Week did an excellent job sharing about herself. We loved hearing our guest reader read a book about a groundhog's garden.
