Today was the day for 2nd grade's Annual Blood Drive. We sponsor this event as part of our unit on Keeping Healthy. After a very icy cancellation, we were happy that today turned out to be a beautiful day to get out and help others. Thank you to all of the Pinkerton staff members, parents and family members who donated blood. Pinkerton staff and learners were also very pleased to honor our awesome volunteers with a Volunteer Breakfast this morning. We hope all of our volunteers were able to attend. We appreciate all of your hard work and time spent here at our school and on field trips and events. THANK YOU!

This week we kicked off our new unit on life cycles by learning in the Pinkerton Patch. Mrs. Pickrell spoke to 2nd grade about planting and composting. As a part of our math unit on economics and personal finance, we discussed producers and consumers. Then we split into pairs to create short plays with dialogue between a producer and a consumer. We performed our original plays for our class.
Last week we concluded our unit on conserving natural resources and keeping our environment healthy. We put together a short video to remind people to reduce, reuse and recycle. We kicked off our new unit on life cycles by looking at different living organisms and making circle maps showing what we know about each one.
Our current unit of study in math is personal finance. We have been learning about saving and spending. Mrs. Susie Mayes from Las Colinas Federal Credit Union came to speak to 2nd grade about ways to make money on your savings. We are continuing our efforts to clean up our air with our Turn Off Your Engines campaign in the car loops. Thanks to the parents who wait with car engines off to save our environment by creating less air pollution.
We ended our week with celebrations. First we celebrated our Star of the Week. We were happy to hear her mom read to us today and hear her star presentation. Then we celebrated twin birthdays outside with delicious cupcakes. It was a happy birthday X 2 + a baby brother! We also took time earlier in the week to honor our Global Citizens for the 3rd nine week. Congratualtions girls!
This week in language arts, we have been reading and writing about books that teach us about conserving our natural resources and protecting the environment. We have talked about cause and effect and compared The Wump World and The Lorax. Mrs. Marilyn Horton came to talk to 2nd grade about recycling in Coppell. We learned about what items can be recycled and what must be thrown in the trash. We also learned about where recycled items go after they have been picked up in our alleys. Mrs. Horton also told us about the Coppell Farmers Market and why buying from local farmers is healthful for us and helps our community. We also kicked off our Turn Off Your Engine campaign to remind parents picking up learners in the car loops to turn off their cars while waiting to keep our air clean. We will continue our campaign tomorrow.
As we continue our unit on the environment this past week, we wrote poems with an earth theme. We ended our week with a wonderful guest reader and a great presentation from our Star of the Week.
Mrs. Freyou kicked off Poetry Month today during our library time. Learners listened to her read some of her favorite poems. After checking out books, learners enjoyed participating in activities related to poetry. They read and wrote poems, as well as found a poem to keep in their pocket.
