Next week Pinkerton will be celebrating the cultures of our families at our annual International Night. This year 2A will be learning about South Korea, with the help of Mrs. Shin. We spent the rest of the morning practicing reading, writing and spelling with our Daily Five activities. After recess, we enjoyed hearing Mr. Caviness read to us.
In the afternoon, we became geologists as we learned about the three types of rocks. We had fun observing the properties of some very interesting rocks.
This week we started at new IB unit called Sharing Our Planet. We launched our unit by playing a game called 4 Corners. Each corner represented a different natural resource and learners had to choose which natural resource they would want to live near and stand in the corner with that sign. Then they were asked to tell us the pros and cons of living there, as well as why they made their choices. We have been looking at natural resources and land forms. Today we worked on maps that show where certain natural resources and land forms are located throughout the world. After recess, we planted carrots and radishes in the Pinkerton Patch garden. We can't wait to taste them when they are grown.
We celebrate the first day of spring today. With it comes rain and a rescheduled fun run. We are looking forward to the Pinky Hustle next Friday. This past week was filled with other exciting activities. Wednesday was quite busy with our field trip to the Perot Museum (see yesterday's blog) and Open House. On Thursday, we were back to business as usual, working on Daily Five activities. Today, after a rainy indoor recess, we enjoyed hearing Mr. Anand read to us. We love our guest readers!!
2nd graders had a great time visiting the Perot Museum on Wednesday. Thanks to Mrs. Olmstead, Mrs. Fox, Mrs. Caviness, Mrs. Graves, Mrs. Erickson, Mr. Rossini and Mrs. Wilson for acting as chaperones. Check out our trip below. Just when we thought winter was over, along comes another round of ice and snow. Nonetheless, 2A worked hard this week to finish up our IB unit on Keeping Healthy. On Monday morning, we Skyped with Coppell High School learners from Mrs. Jodie Deinhammer's anatomy class. We discussed body systems and asked questions about bodies. On Wednesday, members from the anatomy class came to Pinkerton second grade classes to demonstrate a cow eye dissection. Learners were able to view and even touch the inside parts of the cow eye. We were very impressed with the high school learners' knowledge and skill! Thanks, Mrs. Deinhammer, for giving us this opportunity. Everyone worked very hard to complete their extension projects on health and safety related topics such as heart health, drugs and alcohol, allergies, safety gear and fire safety. We look forward to seeing the presentations and finding out what additional information about health and safety learners found through their research. Using the information they have learned during our unit, learners wrote about the actions they plan to take to improve their overall health and live a healthy lifestyle.
