Second grade celebrated Chinese New Year on Friday with our annual Chinese New Year Parade. Thanks goes to Mr. Phillips for donating the colorful lion costumes. Following the parade, learners enjoyed a tasty snack of mandarin oranges and fortune cookies. Earlier in the week, our class continued our study of conservation of natural resources by doing a 3R sorting activity. Learners worked together to decide whether an item should be reused or recycled, or just used less. We also learned about the importance of water to all living things. We discussed how much of our available fresh water can become polluted and unusable. Groups worked as engineers to design an effective water filter system. Filters were tested to see which one worked best. Star of the Week We are down to the wire with our chick hatching project. The eggs have been turned for the last time. The incubator is locked down and all that is left is for the chicks to start breaking out. Please be sure to check out our live feed to see the eggs start to hatch. They may start as early as Sunday.

Our class has been learning about natural resources and conservation. After hearing the story Wump World, learners worked together to make posters describing ways to save our environment. This week, learners enjoyed reading to each other during reading workstations. Learners love Morning Choice activities. We are still preparing for our chicks to hatch. We are a little over half way there. Learners used creativity and problem solving skills during Makerspace this week. Our guest reader read to us about Chinese New Year, which started today. She was so sweet to bring items for us to see. She also brought a yummy treat! We ended the week hearing about our Star of the Week!
2A had lots of fun today at our Valentine's Day party! We all enjoyed tasty snacks, a fun game of bingo, reading the compliments that classmates wrote about us, and reading all of our valentines. Thanks to Mrs. Patel and Mrs. Walker for an awesome party! Thanks also to the other parents who joined us for the fun.
On Monday we celebrated the 100th Day of School. We participated in several activities related to the number 100. The class worked on a 100th Day poster. They wrote about what they would do with $100. We did 100 exercises. The class listened to several books related to 100. Groups worked together to build towers using 100 paper cups. The class was excited to get a head start on our next unit, which is about cycles. Even though we are still wrapping up our current unit on natural resources, we went ahead and got our eggs in our incubator so they would hatch before spring break. Class members turn the eggs first thing in the morning. Second grade is helping with deliveries on Popcorn and Pickle Days. 2A class members enjoy sorting and delivering valentines to Pinkerton learners and staff during the Pinkerton Post Valentine Post Office project. Second grade continues the long running tradition of operating the post office, which includes sorting and delivering valentines during the week before Valentine's Day. Other activities this past week included Star of the Week activities, Morning Choice activities, and a fabulous guest speaker to talked to 2nd grade about fossil fuels.
January went out with a big burst of wind! As part of our unit on weather, learners went outside to determine wind direction using a couple of unconventional tools. We found that the crepe paper flag worked best due to the velocity of the wind. We love going to library on Tuesdays. It is a great place to hang out. During morning choice time, learners love creating with Legos. One Star of the Week presents his poster, while another reads to the class. We were happy to have Mrs. Pickrell come and present a lesson on producers and consumers. The class saw how cotton goes from the farm to factory to product. Since Friday was Groundhog Day, we had fun learning a little bit about groundhogs. Just like a groundhog, we went out and looked for our shadows. |
