We continued to work on our research projects. Learners are researching health related topics such as nutrition, keeping safe online, bullying, safety equipment for sports, germs, bacteria and viruses, misuse of drugs and alcohol, environmental health and cancer. We will be presenting our findings at Open House in March. |
Today we finished up the week with some Pinky Hustle prizes for registration and donations. Way to go, girls! There is still time to collect donations! We had a busy week this week, and we are looking forward to an even busier one next week. Check out what we have planned:

Gung Hay Fat Choy! Happy Chinese New Year! Second graders celebrated the end of the Chinese New Year season with a colorful parade. This is the final activity of our IB unit on Cultural Celebrations. In math, we have been learning about data analysis. We looked at how many people in the world get regular exercise. We created a bar graph to show how many people in various countries exercise. We compared and contrasted these numbers with the number of people in the United States who exercise. We also showed the information using a pie graph and discussed which graph was more helpful in analyzing our data. 2A learners also collected data on Pinkerton learners' favorite ways to exercise. Small groups visited classrooms to gather data, then used the data to create graphs. They then developed questions for classmates to answer using the graphs. On Friday, as part of our current IB unit on Keeping Healthy, Dr. Alles and his dental hygienist Miss Esther visited second grade to discuss the importance of good dental health. Check out our amazing learners dressed as teeth getting a well needed brushing. Be sure to ask your learner what is important about the number 2. Also on Friday, 2A was happy to have twice the guest readers. Thanks to the two cousins who came by to share a book or two! Friday was such a beautiful day, we took the opportunity to get out into our Pinkerton Patch and check out what is growing there. And of course, we had a few February birthdays to celebrate this month. They were all sweet experiences! We are looking forward to a few more next week.
As part of the Valentine's Day festivities, 2nd grade was pleased to sponsor the Annual Valentine's Day mailbox. Each 2nd grade class sorted and delivered valentines to learners and staff members at Pinkerton during the week before Valentine's Day. In conjunction with our IB unit on Keeping Healthy, we listened to a representative talk about how leukemia affects blood cells. We are collecting coins in each classroom to donate to the Leukemia Society. Also, a part of the proceeds from the Pinky Hustle will also go to the Leukemia Society. We also were pleased to hear Trevor Bergman from LIMBS International speak about helping people in need around the world receive artificial limbs. We hope to help 5th grade out in purchasing five limbs for this organization. We have been busy incorporating our health unit into math and language arts. We had fun participating in workstations that allowed us to practice math and reading skills while we learn about bodies and nutrition. Earlier in February, we were happy to have a former 2A parent come and speak to use about Chinese New Year traditions. We are busy preparing for 2nd grade's annual Chinese New Year parade that is planned for next week.
