The BIG news this week is that we have begun hatching our chicks! The class has been waiting all year for this to happen. I picked up eggs from our friend at an egg farm in McKinney and we placed them in the incubators on Wednesday. So, we only have to wait patiently for 21 DAYS and then we should be able to welcome our new feathery friends. Each day we will take turns carefully turning the eggs so they will develop properly. This week we launched our new IB unit, How the World Works, by using our problem solving skills to put together puzzles showing different examples of cycles. We will be exploring different cycles and comparing and contrasting them. We started our exploration by observing eggs and their parts. We also did other investigations to observe changes in an egg when it is dropped into different liquids. Pinkerton celebrated our awesome volunteers this past week with a Volunteer Breakfast on Thursday. Learners made banners and cards to thank our wonderful parent volunteers. We ended the week with a special guest reader. Our class was excited to have Mrs. Graves read to us.

On Friday, Pinkerton kicked off our Earth Day celebrations by hosting Walk to School Day. Learners walked or rode bikes to school to save energy and reduce pollution from car exhaust. 2nd graders released ladybugs in the Pinkerton Patch garden to help control pests with polluting the soil. After lunch, our class picked up trash on the playground. We were surprised at how much trash we found. We decided we must remind people to put trash in the proper containers and also pick up others' trash when we see it. Earlier in the week, our class listened to books about the importance of conserving our natural resources. We made our own Lorax mustaches and wrote a paragraph to remind ourselves and others that we can make a positive difference in the world. Also earlier in the week, we explored solar energy by making solar ovens from pizza boxes. After waiting patiently for a warm, sunny day, we were able to use them to make nachos. Yum! We also discussed problems that air pollution causes and how we can help keep the air clean. We made posters to encourage parents in our car lines to turn off their car engines while waiting for dismissal to help stop air pollution. We took our posters out to the front loop car line in the afternoon to see if we could encourage parents to help make a difference. Other exciting activities this week included two birthdays and a guest reader. It was fun to have Emily Denton as our guest reader this week. She doesn't get to visit as often as she used to.
We had a great time this week learning about natural resources. We had a guest speaker talk about his former job at Mobil Oil. We talked about the importance of water and air. At the end of the week, we were lucky to have a outdoor lesson with the teacher from Real School Gardens. Earlier in the week we enjoyed seeing the Drama Club perform their current play. We loved seeing our friend from 2A and a former 2A friend starring in the Three Little Pigs segment of the play. Our class was excited to learn that they won this week's contest for bring in the most pull tabs from aluminum cans. Yay 2A! We loved the popsicles!
This week our class learned about natural resources. We began by looking at trees. We explored how trees soak up carbon dioxide from the air and produce oxygen in return. We also have been looking at ways to conserve and protect our water. We designed filters to help remove harmful pollutants from water. We found that sand was more effective in filtering pollutants than other materials. Ready to test our designs. Let the testing begin. We will continue to explore natural resources next week. Thanks to Mrs. Telling for coming to read to us. She brought a giant stack of Caldecott Award books. Now the class can add 5 stars each on the book charts!
Pinkerton kicked-off International Day today with an awesome assembly. Learners, dressed in cultural clothing, marched in at the beginning of the assembly. The audience was entertained by several dances and songs from various cultures. Representatives from each grade level presented interesting facts about the seven continents.
2A learners looked fabulous in their clothing that represented their culture. Following the assembly, we traveled around the school to look at the bulletin boards from each continent of the world. They were quite impressive! Second graders created the board about Europe.
The third nine weeks zipped by. We celebrated our achievements at our end of the nine weeks assembly. Our Global Citizens were honored, along with the Coppell Education Foundation Red and Black Super Star. We recently celebrated a birthday in our class. We also celebrated this 2A learner for running in the Ft. Worth Zoo run coming in first in her age group! Other activities included sorting and comparing rocks, as well as identifying their properties. We enjoyed hearing Mrs. Hunt reading a great Caldecott award winning book. Then later in the afternoon, we spent some quality time in the library checking out books. In honor of International Day at our school, we learned about the United Kingdom. We were very happy to have Mr. Telling come and talk to us about life in the UK. We had fun putting on our thinking caps in Makerspace this week.
